Geography and Economy
Located about 230 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville is a coastal city surrounded by beautiful beaches such as Serendipity, Ochheuteal, and Otres, as well as several tropical islands. Once mainly dependent on fishing and port activities, its economy has expanded rapidly into tourism, construction, and real estate. At the heart of this growth, Sihanoukville Autonomous Port remains Cambodia’s main maritime gateway and an important hub for international trade.
Development and Transformation
Since the mid-2010s, Sihanoukville has undergone rapid transformation, driven largely by investment in real estate, casinos, and infrastructure. This development has reshaped the city’s skyline and economy while placing greater pressure on local infrastructure and changing its traditional coastal character. In response, the government has invested in roads, power facilities, and industrial zones to strengthen Sihanoukville’s role in regional trade and economic development.
Tourism and Culture
Once known as a relaxed backpacker destination, Sihanoukville has evolved into a growing beach tourism center and the main gateway to the beautiful islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. Today, the city reflects a blend of Cambodian and Chinese cultural influences, seen in its diverse cuisine, seafood markets, and rapidly changing urban landscape.
Challenges and Outlook
Rapid development has brought challenges such as overdevelopment, pressure on public infrastructure, waste management, and the environment. In response, the Cambodian government is investing in urban renewal and improved infrastructure to modernize the city. The long-term goal is to build a more sustainable and environmentally friendly Sihanoukville while strengthening its role as a major tourism, trade, and special economic hub.
